Bird News for Creatives

How Winter Bird Care Can Spark Creativity!

As Winter settles in, our familiar garden bird companions, robins, blackbirds and blue tits, begin to feel the chill. Hedgerow food becomes scarcer, the days grow shorter, and these lively little visitors rely ever more on the kindness of humans. But what if helping winter birds could also help boost creativity, wellbeing and community spirit in care homes?

At SFYC, we believe that creativity can do more than produce beautiful artworks - it can bring people together and make a genuine difference to the wildlife around us. This winter, we’re encouraging care homes to embrace a heart-warming blend of bird care and creative activity, supporting residents while also supporting feathered friends who need winter feeding.

Creativity That Makes a Difference

Many care homes across the Cotswolds already understand the value of meaningful activity. From arty crafting to cosy conversation, creative projects help residents stay engaged, uplifted and socially connected. But when those activities are tied to nature and kindness - such as making bird feeders or painting birds - the benefits multiply.

In the Cotswolds, residents have been embracing this idea with joy. They’ve spent time decorating hand-made cardboard cut-outs of garden birds, painting robin bird feathers in bold red colours, and looking at crafting simple bird feeders to hold seeded fat balls.

These fun-fuelled sessions have sparked not only creativity but also connection: lively discussions about favourite birds, shared memories of garden birdwatching, and even spontaneous singing! One lovely lady resident joyfully burst into birdsong-inspired melodies! The atmosphere was filled with laughter, nostalgia and pride as residents admired their displayed creations. The results, as one resident art group member put it, were “bird brilliant.”

So, why do bird-themed activities work so well?

Nature-based activities have been shown to:

  • Encourage positive emotions and nostalgia

  • Boost wellbeing through simple acts of kindness

  • Strengthen social bonds through shared creative tasks

  • Provide sensory engagement – colour, texture, sound

  • Offer achievable tasks that bring real-world impact

Feeding winter birds is a small act with big meaning. And when residents see their bird tables busy with visitors, it brings delight and a sense of purpose.

Have a go at these bird-inspired creative activities this Winter:

If your retirement village or care home is looking for uplifting projects that blend art, nature and wellbeing, here are three ideas to get started:

  • Make a beautiful bird table
A simple wooden bird table becomes a daily focal point for residents. Place it near a window so everyone can enjoy the chirpy show.

  • Create your own bird musical hit list
From “Blackbird” by The Beatles to “The Birdie Song,” make a playlist of music inspired by birds. Let it spark singing, dancing or storytelling.

  • Mix together seeds to make bird food balls
A hands-on, sensory activity that results in a nutritious treat for garden birds. Residents can hang the food balls and watch their impact almost immediately.

So, this Winter, let’s make gardens livelier, residents happier and our creativity even brighter – one bird, one brushstroke and one seed ball at a time!
